After eight years of playing Captain America on the silver screen, Chris Evans is hanging up his shield. The actor tweeted a heartfelt note after shooting his last scene as the popular Marvel character in the upcoming Avengers film.
“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day, to say the least,” Evans tweeted earlier this week. “Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
The last time we saw Evans play Steve Rogers was earlier this year in Avengers: Infinity War. His character was one of the few superheroes that survived Thanos’ attack on Earth, and he will be a big part of the next Avengers movie .
The New York Times published an article earlier this year that claimed Avengers 4 would be the last time Evans played the Captain America character, and he would retire after they finished reshoots. Evans told the paper that you want to “get off the train before they push you off.”
Evans has also said that he ended up extending the role beyond the initially agreed upon six films. He says that after the third Avengers movie, he could have been done. But, they wanted him to be a part of the third and fourth Avengers films as a two-parter. There were so many characters that they had to fit into Avengers: Infinity War, it made sense to split the story up into two movies, and it will “wrap everything up.”
The 37-year-old actor has appeared in a Marvel movie every year since 2011, starting with Captain America: The First Avenger. The next year he did the first Avengers movie, then Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War.
He also had cameos in Ant-Man, Thor: The Dark World, and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
According to Us Weekly, fans are starting to speculate about who will take Evans’ place.
